Brief History

Asaba Specialist Hospital is a 220 bedded Tertiary Health Facility located at GRA Phase 11, Asaba in Delta State. It was established in February, 2019 when skeletal services (outpatient care) commenced in the hospital from 8 am to 6 pm. Subsequently, in September 2020, full services began in a phased manner until it reached full state of activities a short while later. It was officially commissioned by His Excellency, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State on 15th June, 2021. Since then, the hospital has witnessed a steady growth/expansion, in terms of upgrading of the facilities, infrastructure and manpower development to meet the growing needs of the population she serves. The hospital is made up of fourteen (14) clinical departments including Radiology, Family Medicine, Public Health, Accident and Emergency, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Anesthesia and Ophthalmology. Supporting services within the hospital include; Nursing, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Electrocardiography (ECG), Ambulance and Mortuary. There are thirteen (13) Inpatient Wards one of which is a well-equipped Intensive Care Unit in the facility. The hospital also has two (2) Rural Centers, Primary Health Centre, Ugbolu and Government Hospital, Ibusa for rural postings and experience. The centers are run by the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and the State Hospitals Management Board respectively.

TRAINING AND ACCREDITATIONS Training of Allied Health Personnel The Hospital has accreditation to train Intern Doctors, Pharmacists, Graduate Nurses and Medical Laboratory Scientists. The hospital is presently the teaching hospital in agreement with Novena University, Ogume, for the training of their Student Nurses, and Medical Laboratory Scientists. ASH is also the teaching hospital for the clinical training of nurses and midwives and other allied health staff of Delta State School of Health Technology, Asaba and Delta State School of Midwifery through a Memorandum of Understanding with these establishments.

Training of Medical Students Asaba Specialist Hospital is the teaching hospital for the training of Medical Students of Novena University, Ogume, Delta State (a Private University with a Medical School). We are accredited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) as a Teaching Hospital for Novena University, College of Medical Sciences, Ogume.The Hospital is also accredited by the MDCN for housemanship training of a significant number of newly qualified medical doctors who trained both in Nigeria and in foreign countries.

Postgraduate Training of Medical Doctors The hospital has full accreditation to train medical specialists in Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics by the West African College of Physicians. It also accredited in Obstetrics and Gynaecology by the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria for the training of specialist doctors up to part II level. Substantial efforts are being made for obtaining accreditation in Orthopedics as well as other specialties. 

MRI training of Radiology Resident doctors The hospital also has a Memorandum of Understanding with the St Luke’s Specialist Hospital, Asaba for the rotation of Resident Doctors in Radiology Department in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) while efforts are being made to complete the repairs of the one on ground.

Medical Records

The hospital has a centralized as well as dedicated medical records system manned by 21 trained staff and Industrial Training Students. There is a dedicated antenatal medical records for our pregnant women.

Pharmacy

The Pharmacy is decentralized with 3 service points (In-Patient, Accident and Emergency, Paediatrics). There is a Central Pharmacy, Drug Compounding Unit, Drug Information Centre and a Central Drug Store.

The Department is manned by 17 Pharmacists, 12 Interns, 8 Pharmacy Technicians, and 2 Cleaners.

Laboratory

The hospital has a well-equipped laboratory Department proving Hematology, Microbiology, Chemical Pathology, Histopathology and Morbid Anatomy. There is a Consultant Pathologist, 18 Laboratory Scientists, 7 Technicians, 6 Clerks, 4 Cleaners and 2 Health Assistants in the department.

Theatre/Intensive Care Unit

The hospital has a main theatre with 3 operating suites and a 3 bedded intensive care unit. These are manned by 2 part-time Consultant Anesthetists, 2 Senior Registrars, 6 Nurse Anesthetists, Technicians as well as 13 Perioperative Nurses, 7 Health Assistants and 3 Cleaners.

ANCILLARY SERVICES

Oxygen Delivery: The hospital has an independent oxygen plant with piped oxygen in some wards.

Creche: There is also a well-equipped and staffed Crèche that provides care for staff infants and toddlers while parents are at work. It operates from 7:30am to 6:00pm.

Mortuary: The facility has a Mortuary with capacity to store one hundred and ten (110) bodies dry and forty (40) cold storage. Facilities for autopsy are being upgraded.

Dietetics: There is a Nutrition and Dietetic unit that works closely with the hospital kitchen and Physicians.

Laundry: The hospital Linen is handled by the Laundry department which runs a 24 hours’ service.

Sterilization: Sterilization and autoclaving of equipment and materials is handled both centrally and at the ward level.

Ambulance Services: Ambulance services are available 24 hours a day, every day.

RURAL POSTING The hospital uses general hospital Ibusa for this purpose.
